Congress demands proof from Kabindra on Sushmita’s opposition to Citizenship Bill

The Silchar District Congress Committee trailed guns at the former minister and BJP veteran Kabindra Purkayastha for his comments on the much-awaited report of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

Congress MLA from Lakhipur Rajdip Goala along with the state and district functionaries of the party demanded evidence from Purkayastha on his allegation against Silchar MP Sushmita Dev opposing the Bill.

“The report of the JPC is extremely confidential and is likely to be placed before the Parliament on January 7. We are surprised how the seasoned BJP leader had the updates on who favoured the Bill and who ‘went against.’ This is a serious breach of secrecy and we demand adequate proof from him. What made him claim that Sushmita Dev opposed the Bill,” he asked.

Further, the Congress MLA made it clear that the party is all clear on its stance on the Bill-provisions of the Assam Accord must be adhered to and there should be necessary amendments to the Bill before placing in the Parliament.

The Congress leaders also slammed the placed questions related to the unkept promises before Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of his arrival in Silchar on January 4.
