Court Employee Arrested in Silchar for Financial Fraud Promising Acquittal in Drug Trafficking Case

A court employee was arrested by police in Silchar on charges of financial fraud after allegedly promising to secure an acquittal in a drug trafficking case. An acquittal in court is a judgment that a defendant is not guilty of a crime. The accused, Naharul Islam Choudhury, a “Process Server” at the Lakhipur Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate’s court, was apprehended from his residence in Madhurbond on Thursday. He is to be presented before a special court in Guwahati with a ₹3 lakh bribery case and corruption charges.

43-year-old Naharul, a resident of Gangarpar in the Madhurbond area of Silchar previously served in the same role at the Cachar District and Sessions Court in Silchar. Naharul allegedly took ₹3 lakh from a person with the promise of ensuring acquittal in a drug trafficking case. The complainant, a resident of Bidrohipar under the jurisdiction of Kachudaram police station, accused Naharul of failing to fulfil his promise and later avoided a refund of the payment. After persistent delays, Naharul issued two cheques amounting to ₹2.4 lakh, both of which bounced due to insufficient funds.

Following that, the accused in the drug trafficking case filed an FIR and lodged a complaint under the “Prevention of Corruption Act” of 1988. Cachar Police soon launched an investigation into the matter.

To apprehend the accused Naharul, police arrived at his residence on Thursday night. Naharul attempted to hide, and his family misled officers by claiming he was not at home. However, they couldn’t stall the police for long and the police at his home finally found him.

Finally, the police succeeded in apprehending him.

Naharul was produced in Silchar’s Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court on Friday (December 27), seeking a three-day transit remand to present him in Guwahati’s special court. The remand request was granted, and further legal proceedings are underway.
