A team of the Guwahati Crime Branch reached Silchar and after following the due process, gathered the custody of five alleged masterminds of the ‘Burmese Supari’ syndicate. The team has taken custody of Altaf Hussain, Zakir Talukdar, Anjan Paul, Raaj Saha, Zakir Hussain (of Bagha). 

Silchar Central Jail’s official informed that at around 3:30 pm, all five of them were escorted. As per the records of Silchar Central Jail Authority, they are being taken to Guwahati, to produce them at the court in connection with a parallel proceeding going on in Guwahati City.

It is worth mentioning here that all five of them were apprehended by Cachar Police while investigating Police Case 373/22 of Silchar Sadar Police Station. They are also accused in a Case at Guwahati City Police – 373/22. Silchar Central Jail Authority informed that the Guwhati City Police’s Crime Branch got the production warrant from the Court and based on that, the custody was handed over to Guwahati Police.

Now the court will decide if all five must be forwarded to Guwahati Central Jail or brought back to Silchar Central Jail. It is worth mentioning here that, Kartik Paul and Dipankar Deb (apprehended in Silchar PS C.No 373/22) were given a production warrant to Ghty City Police on February 16, they have been forwarded to Guwahati Central Jail.

These arrests were made after Cachar Police went all out to unearth the nexus that handles the illegal transportation of imported areca nuts. Nuts from Burma or Indonesia is brought to India through Mizoram. From Mizoram, the nexus illegally transports the areca nuts to various parts of the country via Silchar. This illegal transportation costs Assam Government and Central Government several hundred crores as the masterminds bypass the tax and customs duty system.
