Dark clouds loom large over Diwali Celebrations in Assam; IMD Issues “Heavy Rainfall Activity over Northeast Region warning”
The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a warning for the period between October 24 and October 26. This is also the period when the people will celebrate Diwali by lighting diyas and bursting crackers. The warning states, “Heavy Rainfall activity over North East Region during 24-26 October.”
It adds, “The Well Marked Low-Pressure Area over the north Andaman Sea and adjoining areas of the south Andaman Sea & Southeast Bay of Bengal moved west-northwest ward and concentrated into a Depression in the morning at 0830 IST of today, the 22nd October 2022 over southeast adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal, close to the west of Andaman Islands near latitude 12.7°N and longitude 92.4°E, about 110 km north-northwest of Port Blair, 1460 km south-southeast of Sagar Island and 1130 km southsoutheast of Barisal (Bangladesh). It is very likely to move= northwestward and intensify further into a Deep Depression over the east-central and adjoining southeast bay of Bengal by the 23rd October morning.”
Subsequently, it is very likely to recurve gradually north northeastwards and intensify into a Cyclonic Storm over central Bay of Bengal by 24th October morning. The IMD’s warning adds, “Thereafter, it would continue to move northnortheastwards and cross Bangladesh coast between Tinkona Island and Sandwip around 25th October early morning.”
The part that would keep the Puja Committees planning big budget Kali Puja awake at night is, “Under its influence fairly widespread/widespread rainfall accompanied with Thunderstorm/Lightning/heavy to very heavy rainfall with Extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places is very likely to occur over the northeastern states during 24-26 October 2022.”
