Delimitation Update: ECI proposes Silchar Parliamentary Constituency to be reserved for SC, strips Katlicherra, Patharkandi from Karimganj
In a significant move towards the delimitation of Parliamentary and Assembly Constituencies in Assam, the Election Commission of India has published its proposals. Pursuant to Section 8A(5) of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, and Presidential Orders issued vide S.O.No. 903(E) dated 28th February 2020, these proposals aim to ensure fair and equal representation for all sections of society.
One of the major highlights of the proposed changes is the reservation of the Silchar Parliamentary constituency for Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates. Previously reserved Karimganj has been proposed to be converted to a general constituency, indicating a significant shift in representation.
Under the new proposals, the Silchar Parliamentary constituency will encompass the following Legislative Assembly Constituencies: 114. Lakhipur, 115. Udharbond, 116. Katigorah, 117. Barkhola, 118. Silchar, 119. Sonai, and 120. Narsingpur (SC). This realignment aims to address the evolving demographic changes and population dynamics in the region.
In another notable development, the Karimganj Parliamentary constituency has been redefined with the exclusion of Patherkandi and Katlicherra. The proposed reclassification of Karimganj includes 121. Hailakandi, 122. Algapur, 123. Badarpur, 124. North Karimganj, 125. South Karimganj, and 126. Ratabari (SC) Legislative Assembly Constituencies. This revision seeks to reflect the evolving requirements of the constituency and ensure effective representation, according to the ECI.
Delimitation plays a crucial role in determining the boundaries of electoral constituencies, and it is based on factors such as demographic changes and population distribution. By publishing these proposals, the Election Commission of India aims to foster a transparent and inclusive electoral framework that upholds the principles of democracy.
The Election Commission invites citizens and stakeholders to actively participate in the delimitation process by examining the proposed changes and submitting any objections or suggestions. This engagement will contribute to a more comprehensive and representative electoral system in Assam.
To provide feedback or raise concerns, individuals can submit their objections or suggestions to the Secretary, Election Commission of India, Nirvachan Sadan, Ashoka Road, New Delhi-110001, on or before 11th July 2023—the date specified by the Commission for further consideration of the proposals.
