Discussion On Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam Organised at Cachar College
A discussion session on “Women Empowerment vis-à-vis Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, 2023” was organised by the Women’s Cell ‘Sucheta’ in collaboration with IQAC at Cachar College, Silchar, on April 11.
The programme was aimed to create awareness among students and faculty about women’s empowerment and the significance of the Women’s Reservation Bill, 2023, in strengthening democratic participation and promoting gender equality.
Dr Smriti Paul, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Political Science at Cachar College, attended as the resource person. In her address, she elaborated on various dimensions of women’s empowerment, including equal rights, access to education and employment, freedom in decision-making, and protection from discrimination. She also highlighted the key provisions of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, 2023, stating that it provides 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies, including within SC and ST reserved seats. She described the Act as a “landmark step towards inclusive democracy and greater representation of women in governance.”
Principal Dr Apratim Nag appreciated the initiative and stressed the importance of empowering women through education and awareness. He encouraged students to actively participate in decision-making processes and contribute positively to society.
Dr Paramita Das, Head of the Department of Commerce and President of the Women’s Cell, remarked that such discussions are “timely and essential” for raising awareness about constitutional rights, gender justice, and social responsibility among students.
The session witnessed participation from faculty members, administrative staff, and around 70 students. It remained interactive, with students engaging in discussions and raising queries.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr Pushpalata Singha, Secretary of the Women’s Cell, who expressed gratitude to the resource person, principal, faculty members, and participants for their presence and cooperation.
