District Administration Cachar Orders Closure of All Schools Due to Continuous Rain

Silchar, the heart of Barak Valley, is reeling under continuous and heavy rainfall, turning its streets into waterlogged channels. Many lanes, bylanes, and roads across the town are flooded, causing major disruptions. With a flood-like situation developing across parts of the Cachar district, the district administration has stepped in with a key decision — schools across the district will remain closed for two days.

On Sunday, June 1, the District Administration of Cachar issued an official order announcing that all schools — Government, Provincialised, Private, and Venture — shall remain shut on Monday and Tuesday, June 2 & 3, 2025. The closure applies to every school across urban and rural areas of Cachar, regardless of their board or management.

This precautionary step was taken in view of the current weather conditions and forecasts of more rain. The order aims to protect school children, teaching staff, and other school-related personnel from the dangers of waterlogging, traffic issues, and other rain-related problems.

The order clearly states: “As a precautionary measure to ensure the safety and well-being of students, teachers, and all associated personnel, it is hereby ordered that all educational institutions—Government, Provincialised, Private, and Venture Schools across Cachar district—shall remain closed on 2nd and 3rd June 2025 (Monday and Tuesday).”

Authorities have been asked to make sure this information reaches the public through all proper channels to avoid confusion and ensure public safety. Parents are advised to follow official updates and not send their children to school during these days.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had already issued a yellow alert for the entire Barak Valley from June 1 to 4, forecasting continued heavy rainfall across the region. Silchar received over 416mm of rainfall in just 24 hours between 8:30 AM on May 31 and 8:30 AM on June 1 — more than even Mawsynram, one of the wettest places in the world, on the same day. Meanwhile, water levels in rivers flowing through Barak Valley are on the rise, adding to concerns.
