Doctors at SMCH successfully operate nine-day-old baby; “It was a critical surgery,” Dr. Babul Bezbaruah

It is that time of the year when a wave of Coronavirus infection hits Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) like a Tsunami. The overwhelming number of cases become the point of focus. However, apart from treating the patients positive for Covid19, SMCH deals with a wide range of critical cases.

The hospital was presented with a nine-day-old baby having unnatural growth through her mouth. The doctors had no option but to perform an operation on the nine-day-old baby as it was a congenital tumour.

A special team consisting of doctors from the department of ENT, Anaesthesia and Surgery was constituted. Under the leadership of Dr. Smriti Rupa Dutta, IC, HOD – ENT, the team performed the surgery. Silchar Medical College and Hospital has confirmed it was a successful operation.

“It was a difficult surgery in a 9-day-old baby. Kudos to team ENT, Surgery and Anesthesia,” said Principal of Silchar Medical College and Hosptial, Dr. Babul Bezbaruah.

Vice Principal of SMCH, Dr. Bhaskar Gupta also congratulated the team. “After the surgery, the baby has been shifted to Neo Natal Intensive Care Unit at Silchar Medical College and Hospital. The baby is being closely monitored by the specialists at SMCH,” informed, Dr. Bhaskar Gupta.
