Dowry Death in Cachar: Woman Declared Dead at SMCH After Brutal Assault, Husband Absconding
A shocking case of dowry-related violence has emerged from Jagadishpur village in Cachar’s Katigorah, where a woman was allegedly beaten to death by her husband.
The victim, identified as Reshma Begum, was married to Samir Uddin of Jagadishpur in 2021. Family members alleged that since the marriage, Reshma was subjected to both physical and mental torture by her husband and in-laws over dowry demands.
On Monday night (August 18), her husband had allegedly beaten her up brutally, and this morning (August 19), she succumbed to those injuries and was declared “dead” at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital.
According to the complaint, on Monday evening, a dispute broke out again over dowry, following which Samir Uddin allegedly assaulted his wife with a stick, leading to her death. The accused fled the scene soon after.
Police, upon receiving information, recovered the body and sent it to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examination. A case has been registered at Katigorah Police Station, and a search operation is underway to trace the absconding accused.
Reshma’s mother, Muslima Begum, speaking to reporters, said, “Last night she called her father saying her husband had beaten her badly. When I rushed to her in-laws’ house, I found her room locked and the lights switched off. Her husband didn’t allow me to meet her. Later, at around 11:30 PM, we came to know she was taken to Katigorah Model Hospital in a critical condition, from there she was referred to Silchar Medical College and Hospital, where she was declared dead.”
The grieving mother alleged that Samir, along with his parents, Shariful Haque and Ajila Begum, constantly harassed Reshma for dowry and that Samir wanted to remarry.
“We kept fulfilling his demands, but when we failed, he killed her. She was beaten to death,” Muslima added.
Reshma leaves behind two young daughters.
