Dr. Lakhan Das opens up Kalyani hospital’s cremation facility for public; Rupak Chakraborty, Bijendra Prasad Singh can be contacted to avail service

Silchar Samshan is inundated. The pyre is under water. People are running here and there with mortal remains of their near and dear ones. Some are even handing over the dead-bodies to the force and personnel deployed for relief and rescue. Silchar is witnessing unprecedented floods, and at this hour of distress cremation has emerged as a problem of significant pivot.

Dr. Kumar Kanti Das popularly known as Dr. Lakhan Das tabled the issue of cremation before the members of Sundari Mohan Seva Bhawan (Kalyani Hospital) and proposed a solution. There is a cremation spot in Kalyani hospital next to the pond where a few dead bodies were cremated before and Dr. Das proposed to open it for the general public. The trust members accepted the proposal and initiated a plan of action.

Social worker and a colleague of Dr. Das, Rupak Chakraborty initiated the conversation to arrange for wood necessary to cremate dead bodies.

“I spoke with Dilip Chakraborty who controls wood at Silchar Samshan Ghat and he said he will open the stock if people can arrange commute. So, as per the initiative of Dr. Lakhan Das, we have opened the cremation for general public,” informed Rupak Chakraborty.

However, since this is not an official cremation centre, there could be a problem in getting the death certificate. That is where former ward commissioner Bijendra Prasad Singh pitched in and took the responsibility.

“When Rupu Da (Rupak Chakraborty) called me and said that Dr. Lakhan Das wants to open the cremation centre for public but worried about death certificate, I took the responsibilities. I told them that we will use this as a special case and speak with the necessary stakeholders in the administration to ensure that death certificates are arranged,” said Bijendra Prasad Singh.

He added, “It must be noted that as proofs, the family members of the person cremated need to furnish photographs and video footage.”

To avail the facilities of the cremation centre ar the hospital, one can contact Bijendra Prasad Singh, Dilip Chakraborty, or Rupak Chakraborty who is available at 6000324054 9435374198.
