Drug Offenders to Be Denied Janaza and Burial as Kalain Mosque Committees Take Tough Stand
In a bid to curb the rising menace of drugs, five mosque committees in Kalain, Cachar, have announced a strict social boycott of individuals involved in drug-related activities. The decision taken on Tuesday night, backed by local residents, includes refusing to participate in their funeral prayers (janaza) and denying burial in village graveyards.
The resolution was adopted by mosque committees from Azmara, Kandigram, and Tarapur villages, who cited growing concerns over drug abuse, theft, and other criminal activities linked to narcotics. Despite law enforcement crackdowns, drug-related offences continue to plague the region, especially affecting the youth.
During a meeting held after Taraweeh prayers, the mosque committees and villagers agreed to identify and ostracise those engaged in the drug trade and related crimes. Besides the funeral ban, the decision extends to barring their participation in marriages and other community events.
A committee member said, “We have formed an Addiction-Free Committee today. Drugs, alcohol, and other addictive substances are being openly sold, and we had to take a stand. The youth have supported our initiative, and from now on, anyone involved in the narcotics trade will be handed over to the police. We will also inform the Superintendent of Police, Kalain Police Station, and district authorities about our decision.”
The committee members emphasised that the unchecked drug trade has led to a rise in domestic violence, theft, and other social issues, making immediate action necessary.
