Drug overdose kills Lakhipur youth, locals complain of drug menace in the area

Drug overdose has taken the life of a 21 year old in Lakhipur. The youth’s senseless body was found on the playground of Earl Higher Secondary School on Saturday evening. Later he died while undergoing treatment at SMCH. Today after the postmortem, his dead body was taken to his home in Lakhipur for the last rites.

The youth has been identified as Rabi Roy, who is a resident of Cachar’s Lakhipur of Durgapally lane and lives just near the Earl HS School. According to the available information, he was in a drug rehab centre for sometime but that didn’t help his addiction. The locals called Lakhipur police after finding his senseless body, which was later sent to SMCH with the help of his family. He died on the bed of the hospital on Saturday night itself. 

On Sunday evening, his dead body was sent home from Silchar Medical College and Hospital after postmortem. Later, his last rites were concluded today at Lakhipur.

Locals have repeatedly complained about the drug menace at the playground of the school. But it has been alleged that police took no action so far. The addicts have also taken to minor stealing and robbery in the area. Many times, the drug abuse also leads to eve teasing of women and girls. Last evening’s incident has not just saddened the locals but also enraged them. In their words, “If police fail to take action now, we shall”.
