Evening cyclone wreaks havoc in different parts of Cachar
The cyclone caused heavy damage in the Cachar’s Katigorah today. The cyclone struck several places including Kalain, Gumra, Jalalpur and Natanpur in Katigorah. Huge trees fell on the road and disrupted traffic. The cyclone blew away the roofs and tin sheets of many houses. The cyclone also caused power outages in the area as the power transmission lines got cut.
Similar scenes followed at Udharbond too as the 25-minute long cyclone in the evening blew away the roofs of many houses. Big trees including many betel trees got uprooted due to the storm. There was a makeshift market in Shalganga on Wednesday afternoon. Due to the storm, many vendor’s vegetables were washed away in the water of the road. However, no casualties were reported till the time of writing this report.
The Cachar district and Barak Valley as a whole might brace for similar impact in the next few days as a deep depression over southeast Bay of Bengal moved northwestwards today and is likely to move north-northwestwards and intensify gradually into a cyclonic storm named “Mocha”. Continuing to move north-northwestwards, it will gradually intensify futrther into a severe cyclonic storm by May 11 morning and very severe cyclonic storm by May 11 mid-night over Southeast and adjoining Central Bay of Bengal.
Due to the impact of “Mocha” the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather warning for Nagaland, Manipur and South Assam (Barak Valley) as rainfall at many places with heavy rainfall at isolated places is expected to take place on May 14. Tripura, Mizoram and South Manipur might also experience squally wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph on May 14.
