Ex-serviceman Hacks Wife to Death in Sonai; Arrested
A woman was allegedly hacked to death by her husband with a sharp weapon in a shocking incident at Selurpar village in Gobindnagar Part II under Sonai police station in Cachar district on Wednesday night. The accused, identified as former army personnel Situ Das, has been arrested by the police.
According to reports, the incident took place around 9 pm when Situ Das allegedly attacked his wife Shyamali Das with a machete (dao) and struck her repeatedly. The severely injured woman was rushed to Silchar Medical College and Hospital. However, doctors could not save her and she succumbed to her injuries.
The victim’s brother, Dijendra Kumar Das, has filed a police complaint accusing the husband and his two brothers in connection with the incident. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Dijendra alleged that his sister had been facing both physical and mental torture from her husband for nearly 20 years of marriage.
He said that despite the long history of abuse, family members and local elders had earlier tried to resolve the dispute. At one point, after intervention by village elders, Shyamali was sent back to her husband’s home in the hope that the situation would improve.
Dijendra further claimed that two other individuals named Tinku and Rana are also connected to the case, while he identified the husband Situ Das as the main accused. He alleged that Situ Das had a habit of drinking heavily and remained intoxicated most of the time. He also said the accused had recently suffered financial losses.
Family members said that the victim often returned to her parental home after facing violence from her husband. However, after a few days, the husband would come to take her back. The family even sought the help of the local panchayat in an attempt to stop the abuse, but the situation did not improve.
On Wednesday night, the family received information that Situ Das had attacked Shyamali with a dao. They rushed to the spot and took her to Silchar Medical College and Hospital, but she later died from her injuries.
Local women’s rights activist Sikha Rani Das condemned the incident and demanded the strictest punishment for the accused. She described the killing as brutal and called on the administration to ensure justice for the victim.
According to family members and visuals from the scene, the victim sustained multiple injuries on different parts of her body, including her head and hands, and had lost a significant amount of blood due to the attack.
