Fake Gynaecologist Case: Meherpur Woman Files FIR Against Pulak Malakar for Botched Surgery, Organ Removal
In a fresh twist to the fake gynaecologist scandal, a woman from Meherpur, Sabita Sharma (name changed), has filed an FIR against Pulak Malakar and surgeon Dr Pinak Pani Dutta (PP Dutta) for alleged medical negligence that led to the wrongful removal of her healthy ovary and uterus. The complaint has been registered at both Sadar Police Station and Rangirkhari Outpost, with Sharma also submitting her statement to the Senior Superintendent of Police, Numal Mahatta on Thursday (August 7)
Sharma, narrating her ordeal, said she had been suffering from severe abdominal pain since 2023. Based on consultations and tests advised by Dr PP Dutta at Siva Sunari Nari Sikshashram, Silchar, cysts were found on her left ovary. On September 15, 2023, she was admitted for surgery under Dutta’s supervision. However, she alleges that inside the operation theatre, it was Pulak Malakar who took charge of the surgery.
“I was shocked to not find Dr Dutta in the OT. Pulak Malakar told me he would do the surgery. I kept asking why, he insisted. After the surgery, neither he nor Dr Dutta visited me during my stay at the hospital. On the fourth day, Pulak Malakar came and prescribed some medications and signed the release papers,” Sharma recalled. “I later discovered that my right ovary had been removed, not the left one with the cysts.”
She further alleged that complications arose soon after the surgery. Her sutures burst, she experienced heavy bleeding, and her urinary system began to fail. When she confronted Malakar, he asked Sharma to visit him at Gracewell Hospital. “When asked what he removed, as he didn’t inform me of anything after the surgery, he said he removed my right ovary. When I asked why he did that, knowing that my left ovary had cysts, he rebuked me saying that whether he is the doctor or I am the doctor here. I told him that all my sonography reports over the last two years have been showing cysts on my left ovary. He replied, saying that those sonography reports were wrong”.
“PP Dutta had written to remove the left ovary, and even inside the OT Room, when Pulak Malakar asked me which ovary was to be removed, I told him the left. But he removed the right ovary. My urine had stopped, and whenever I complained, he kept on giving me urine infections medications”, she further alleged.
Distressed and bedridden, Sharma later consulted Dr Shahidul Alom Barbhuiya at Nightingale Hospital, who conducted fresh tests and confirmed the presence of a tumour and infection spread further from her left ovary, and even signs of abdominal fluid were there. A second surgery was performed five months after the first, where her left ovary was finally removed.
“Because of Pulak Malakar, my healthy ovary and uterus were taken out. I had to go through another surgery, months of pain, and immense trauma,” she said.
At the SP’s office, Malakar reportedly denied performing any surgeries and claimed he is not a surgeon, despite his signature being found on Sharma’s hospital documents. “If he is not a doctor, why was he inside the OT and signing as Dr Pulak Malakar?” she questioned.
Sharma also accused Dr PP Dutta of being complicit. “He handed over the surgery to a fake doctor without informing me or my family. He is equally responsible,” she stated.
The complainant named four hospitals where Malakar allegedly treated patients — Nari Sikshashram, Gracewell Hospital, JJIMS, and Greenheals — and claimed that most of his surgical procedures were conducted at Gracewell.
