Fake News During Disasters Will Invite Legal Action: Cachar DC Issues Strict Order Amid Inclement Weather
With rising water levels comes the double trouble of fake news often spread through WhatsApp forwards. In light of increasing incidents of fake news circulation during disasters, the Cachar District Administration has issued a stern order warning individuals and media platforms against spreading misinformation during emergencies like floods.
Mridul Yadav, District Commissioner and Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Cachar, invoked powers under the Disaster Management Act, 2005, to issue a directive aimed at curbing the spread of unverified or misleading content, particularly on social media platforms.
“It has come to notice that fake news and misinformation during disaster situations are causing panic, confusion, and disruption of public order,” the order stated. “Such acts hamper effective disaster response and pose a serious threat to public safety and security.”
The order strictly prohibits individuals, groups, and digital platforms, including WhatsApp groups, Facebook pages, and YouTube channels, from circulating unverified or false information related to disasters in the district. It further warns that violators will face legal consequences under the Disaster Management Act, the Indian Penal Code, and the Information Technology Act.
The Superintendent of Police, Cachar, has been directed to monitor such activities via the Cyber Cell and take prompt action against offenders.
Citizens have been urged to rely solely on official sources for updates during disasters and to report suspicious content to the nearest police station or the District Control Room at 03842-239249, 03842-234005, or mobile number 94016-24141.
The order comes into immediate effect and will remain valid until further notice.
