Flood impact: Elderly Man Drowns in Madhura River, decomposed body found after three days

The mortal remains of Mujammil Ali Laskar were found late at night on May 30. The elderly man who had drowned in the Madhura River in Gosaipur and was swept away by the turbulent water last Tuesday. The cyclonic storms have brought heavy rainfall across the state, causing the Barak, Madhura, and Jatinga rivers to swell dangerously. The flow of the river poses a high risk to the people near the banks of the river.

The incident occurred on May 28, Tuesday morning when Mujammil Ali Laskar went near the river by his house to observe the rising water levels. He lost his footing and fell into the river. Despite his son’s desperate attempts to rescue him, he was unable to save his father. Even the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) conducted extensive search operations but could not locate Laskar because of the water currents.

After three days, on Thursday night, Laskar’s decomposed body was finally found in Durgapur. Around 9 PM, locals spotted his body floating in the waters of Ghutghuti Canal near Durgapur Hiarapar, adjacent to the Barak River. News of the discovery quickly spread throughout the area, and residents informed the Barkhola police.

Laskar’s family members have arrived at the scene to identify and claim his body. The tragic incident has cast a shadow over the community, highlighting the severe impact of the Cyclone Remal on the region.

This unfortunate event underscores the importance of exercising extreme caution near swollen rivers during periods of heavy rainfall and flooding. Authorities continue to urge residents to stay safe and heed weather advisories.
