Food grains merchants have suffered loses worth Rs 2,000 crores; Cachar president appeals to Govt. for loan
The recently receded dark tide of the flood left behind a devastating aftermath. Many people became homeless, and some even had to let dead bodies of family members float in the flooded town. People lost their hard earned furniture and a happy life they had built on hard work. One of the most severely affected sections is of the food grains business, states the merchant’s association.
The President of Silchar Food Grains Merchant Association, Pranab Paul Choudhury explains how dreadful the lives of the Businessmen are right now. “The flood has devastated the godowns where the stock was kept. According to our estimates, items worth Rs 1.500 – Rs 2,000 crores got submerged and are now completely unsuitable for consumption,” Paul states.
“Everyday we from the Food Grains Association are filling trucks with destroyed Grains and dumping them in the transit zone. We urge the Assam Govt to grant us loans from the banks without any interest, to recover from this dreadful loss,” Paul adds.
Sugar, rice, pulses and many other stocks are destroyed and completely useless now, he informs. The submerged godowns had witnessed a quick rise in the water level upto 3-4 feet and so, they could not relocate the goods to a high rise zone, informs Paul.
