From Silchar to IPL: Meet Imran Hussain Mazumdar a Cricket System Operator; “KV Srikona Built My Personality”
Working at something you love is everyone’s dream, but not everyone gets to live it. Silchar’s 24-year-old Imran Hussain Mazumdar, on the other hand, made it possible for himself. A big fan of cricket, he always wished to work around the sport. One day, a Google search on jobs in cricket led him to a role that allowed him to work in the IPL, near his favourite team, and witness them lift the trophy.
Imran Hussain Mazumdar hails from Silchar, where he completed his education at NIT Silchar, earning a BTech degree. His technical background paved the way for his role as a Cricket System Operator, a job that requires both technological expertise and problem-solving skills. He works for Hawk-Eye Innovations, a company renowned for its sports officiating and broadcast enhancement technology since 2001. Hawk-Eye’s technologies cover a variety of sports, from cricket to football, providing essential tracking and analysis tools.
Journey
Imran joined Hawk-Eye Innovations on March 2023. Through his job he has been part of last year’s IPL, ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup and other games. This year’s IPL season had him in the role of a Cricket System Operator, where he was responsible for maintaining focus, tracking the ball, and building ball tracking stats for viewers to understand what’s happening on the field. This role required him to monitor each ball, track its bounces, and capture other nuances to create accurate statistics. The primary challenge was the time constraint—he had around 6-10 seconds after each ball to build the track. This role demanded continuous focus and dedication, making it a demanding yet thrilling experience.
Challenges
One of the significant challenges Imran faced this IPL season was adapting to the new Smart Replay technology. Initially challenging, he and his team soon got accustomed to it. Another challenge was the distance from his hometown, that is Silchar, which added a personal strain to his professional responsibilities.
Advice for Aspiring Cricket System Operators
Imran advises anyone wishing to enter this field to develop strong logical thinking and problem-solving skills. These attributes are essential for success in a high-pressure environment like cricket system operations. He credits his school, Kendriya Vidyalaya Srikona, for helping build these skills and shaping his personality, which he believes played a significant role in his career.
Kendriya Vidyalaya Srikona’s Role in his Success
Imran gives significant credit to Kendriya Vidyalaya Srikona for his personal development. The extracurricular activities, sports, debates, and other events he participated in during his school years helped him build skills that are crucial in his current role. He believes that the comprehensive development he underwent at his school played a pivotal role in his success.
Future Goals
Imran has big goals for the future. He aspires to develop further skills and seize bigger opportunities, perhaps even aiming for a role with the ICC someday. While he acknowledges the long journey ahead, he remains committed to his aspirations and is determined to achieve them.
