Govt. of India declares Hailakandi ODF; Only 2 towns in Assam
Aspirational Hailakandi district takes a leap towards cleanliness. The major town of the district, Hailakandi gets ODF plus tag.
According to a government of India survey, out of the 1,301 certified ODF plus towns and cities, Hailakandi and Golaghat towns from Assam have made into the list.
A city can be notified/declared
as ODF+ city, if at any point of the day, not a single person is found defecating and/or urinating in the open and all community and public toilets are functional and well maintained.
Hailakandi district was declared ODF in 2018 with construction of more than 80,000 individual household latrines under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan.
Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli congratulated the officials and employees of the Hailakandi Municipal Board for their efforts in making Hailakandi town ODF plus. “Credit to all the foot workers and line staff who start very early in the morning cleaning all roads and lanes, engineers, staff, DPO, EO Shri Tridip Roy ACS, ward commissioners/members/chairperson of Hailakakdi Municipality. Congratulations to the district for the proud moment. Thank you for all your support,” a statement from her office mentioned.
It can be mentioned here that during the term of Deputy Commissioner Jalli Keerti, slew of initiatives have been taken such as banning of plastic, opening plastic bank, plastic fishing to clean the river Dholeswari, wall paintings etc, to get register the Hailakandi in list of clean districts of India.
The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’s guidelines, prepared by the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation (MDWS) state that after a village or town or district has secured the ODF status, efforts must be made to work towards transitioning the village/town/ district into an ODF plus one and plus two.
