Gruesome Act of Animal Cruelty at Hillara Tea Estate In Cachar, Manager Suspends Employee
In a deeply disturbing incident, Ashit Nandi, a Field Staff member at Hillara Tea Estate in Katigora Constituency of Cachar has been accused of brutally killing a domesticated goat. The incident occurred today within the estate, which has been a safe upland for many domesticated animals seeking refuge after recent floods.
The horrific act has sparked outrage on social media, drawing attention to Nandi’s alleged history of mistreating animals during such times. Despite available avenues for compensation for damages caused by domesticated animals to the garden, Nandi chose to take matters into his own hands. A video of the incident revealed that Nandi choked and trampled the goat to death when it wandered into Section 8 of the tea garden.
The Manager of Hillara Tea Garden, Rajeshwar Choudhury, expressed his shock and dismay over the incident in a telephonic conversation with Barak Bulletin. “I can’t say why he did this act against this defenceless animal, but whatever he did was hurtful and inhuman. I got this information after some of the tea garden labourers came to me seeking justice against this inhuman act. After learning about the incident, I confronted him. When he confessed, I suspended him without any second thoughts. I am deeply hurt by seeing the visuals of this incident,” Choudhury stated.
Manager Choudhury further explained the steps taken following the incident: “When the tea garden labourers came to me for justice, I asked him (Ashit Nandi) to compensate the owner of the goat. Additionally, I have sternly informed him that he has no place in my garden. I have drafted the letter of suspension, and tomorrow, when the director arrives at the garden, the suspension will be official with his signature.”
The incident provoked a strong reaction from the tea garden labourers, who protested and demanded justice. They gheraoed the manager’s office when their initial demands were not met. The situation escalated until the village panchayat members intervened to diffuse the tension.
The swift action taken by the Hillara Tea Garden management serves as a reminder of the importance of the humane treatment of all living beings.
