In a historic achievement for India’s space exploration endeavours, Dr. Baharul Islam, a scientist hailing from Hailakandi district, has played a pivotal role in the development of ISRO’s Chandrayaan-3 mission. Dr. Islam’s remarkable journey from a government school in Hailakandi to ISRO has resulted in the successful soft landing of the Vikram lander on the lunar surface.

India solidified its place as the fourth country globally to achieve a successful lunar soft landing, and remarkably, also secured the title of the first nation to reach the Moon’s south pole. The tireless efforts of ISRO’s team have earned them immense pride and admiration from citizens across the nation.

Dr. Baharul Islam’s specialised contributions in developing the high-resolution sensor for Chandrayaan-3 have played a crucial role in the triumph of the mission. He passed matriculation from Government Victoria Memorial Higher Secondary School, Hailakandi, followed by a B.Sc degree with first class from Srikishan Sarada College and an Msc with first class from Aligarh Muslim University. Joining ISRO as a junior scientist in 2009 after attaining his PhD, Dr. Islam’s dedication and brilliance have shone through.

Currently deeply involved in the ongoing Chandrayaan-3 mission, Dr. Islam expressed his profound pride in being a part of the team to our correspondent. However, due to the organisation’s confidentiality protocols, he refrained from delving into the specifics of his work.

The impact of Dr. Islam’s achievement has reverberated through Hailakandi, with his relatives, neighbors, friends and fellow residents celebrating his monumental success. Speaking to reporters, Dr. Islam’s uncle expressed their collective joy, attributing his success to the unwavering support of his parents and grandparents, whose prayers and efforts played an integral role.

His uncle reiterated that this achievement is not only a personal triumph for Dr. Baharul Islam but also a moment of pride for the entire nation. As India continues to push the boundaries of space exploration, Dr. Islam’s journey stands as a testament to the nation’s scientific prowess and determination.
