The dead body of a woman was found floating in the Longai river yesterday. The body was naked and several parts including both the hands were chopped off. The body, though deformed has been identified and the locals have alleged that she was gang-raped and then brutally murdered.

A resident of Ambarkhana Village in Karimganj, the woman was missing for the last seven days. Yesterday, at around 10:00 am, people in the Fakirabazar area saw a body floating in the river. Soon the air in the area got filled with a foul smell. Locals saw that it is a deformed and naked body and they immediately informed the Karimganj Sadar Police Station.

The Officer-in-charge along with other senior officials of Karimganj Police Station rushed to the spot and at around 1:00 pm, the body was recovered with the help of SDRF Jawans. The body was sent to the morgue of Karimganj Civil Hospital.

Meanwhile, Mahila Congress President and former Silchar MP, Sushmita Dev wrote to the chief minister of Assam, Sarbananada Sonowal. Dev in her letter mentioned, “She (the woman) was allegedly gang-raped and murdered. The dead body, seems to be a brutal murder, was found in a very miserable condition and local Police have identified the body.”

She adds, “It is reported in the local newspaper that she was found missing from her house on September 21, 2020. The father of the girl, informed about the missing of his daughter in Longai Police Out-post on the same day. Later on, her father lodged an FIR against the kidnapping of his daughter. It is alleged that local Police has done nothing after getting the missing and kidnapping complaint which has led to the loss of life of the girl.”

“The rape and brutal murder of the girl has caused severe trauma and fear amongst the people of the district of Karimganj. The family members are also in deep shock. It is alleged that if Police had taken timely action into the complaint, the incident could have been stopped.”

She concludes, “I demand that this matter is taken extremely seriously and the culprits must be brought to justice without any delay, whatsoever. It is suspected that there is a group of people involved in this kidnapping and each and everyone must be brought to justice. You are the Home Minister of Assam and your personal intervention is requested in this matter. We also demand a CID enquiry to be ordered immediately.”
