Heatwave Fear: Cachar Schools to Begin at 7:30 AM from 11 June

In a swift response to the rising temperatures, the District Administration of Cachar has issued an official order asking all schools to change their opening timings from 11 June 2025. This move comes on the same day as a social media post by Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, who urged all District Commissioners to stay alert and adjust school hours as needed due to the ongoing heat conditions.

On Tuesday, 10 June, the District Administration of Cachar released an order announcing revised timings for all government and private schools across the district. The new school hours, effective from 11 June, are:

  • – L.P. Schools: 7:30 AM to 12:15 PM
  • – U.P. Schools: 7:30 AM to 12:45 PM
  • – High Schools / Higher Secondary Schools: 7:30 AM to 1:15 PM

This decision has been taken after observing consistently high temperatures across the district over the past week. With mercury levels rising further, the administration felt it necessary to protect the well-being of students by reducing their exposure to heat during peak daytime hours.

The order reads, “Whereas Cachar district is persistently facing high temperatures during the last week and considering the continuous rise in mercury levels, appropriate measures must be taken to ensure the well-being of the students and minimise their exposure to extreme heat during school hours. Whereas after careful consideration and consultation with relevant authorities, it is felt important to reopen all school timings within the district, effective from 11/06/2025. This adjustment is intended to facilitate a cooler environment for students, ensuring their safety and comfort during the hotter parts of the day.”

Earlier today, Minister Ranoj Pegu posted on X, “In view of the heat wave alert issued by the Meteorological Department, all District Commissioners are requested to remain vigilant and exercise their delegated authority to reschedule school hours as per local weather conditions.”

Along with his post, the Minister shared a temperature map from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) showing maximum temperatures across India. The map highlighted several areas in Assam, including Cachar, under the Orange alert zone with recorded temperatures up to 36°C.

During heatwaves or intense heat, people are advised to stay indoors during peak hours, drink plenty of water, wear light and breathable clothes, avoid heavy physical activities, and keep living spaces cool. Special care should be taken for children, elderly persons, and those with health conditions.
