“Heavy rainfall in Barak Valley for the next five days; Regional Meteorological department issues weather alert

Regional Meteorological Department, Guwahati has issued a “Special Weather Bulletin” on April 1, 2022. The bulletin was issued because of the “increase in Rainfall Activity over the North Eastern States” from April 1 to April 5, 2022. There are chances of heavy rainfall in Meghalaya which might hamper the traffic movements along the route including Silchar to Guwahati. There are chances of isolated heavy rainfall over Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi for the next five days.

The current meteorological conditions according to the bulletin say, a cyclonic circulation lies over northeast Bangladesh & neighbourhood and extends up to 0.9 km above mean sea level. A trough from east Bihar to northwest Bay of Bengal at 1.5 km above mean sea level also persists. Along with that, moisture incursion is very likely to occur due to strong lower levels of Southerly or Southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal to Northeast India from April 1 to 5 2022. The bulletin read, “Under its influence, fairly widespread rainfall activity with isolated heavy to very heavy falls very likely to occur over the northeast region from April 1 onwards.”

There are also chances of moderate rainfall over other states of the North East including Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. On April 1, there are chances of light to moderate rainfall at many places with isolated heavy rainfall. Chances of thunderstorms and lightning at isolated places are there alongwith heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over Meghalaya. The Meteorological Department also said, on April 2, there will be light to moderate rainfall at many places with isolated heavy rainfall. Along with that, chances of thunderstorms and lightning are also there in isolated places.

From April 3 to 5, there are also chances of light to moderate rainfall at most places with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over Assam and Meghalaya. These pre-monsoon rainfall are common in these regions and are known by different names in different places. In Bengal, it is also known as Kalboisakhi and Bordoisila in Assamese.
