Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurates 40-bedded ICU in SMCH; “Will add 60 more beds in next 4 months”

What is deemed as a historical up-gradation for the healthcare system in Barak Valley, health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has inaugurated the 40-bedded newly built ICU in Silchar Medical College and Hospital.

“For the first time, SMCH has got 40 ventilators in one go. With this, we take a step ahead towards fulfilling the need for an enhanced Intensive Care Unit. This is a historical moment for Silchar Medical College and Hospital,” said the health minister.

He added that this ICU has been constructed in a manner that can be further enhanced. “We can add 100 more ventilators in this unit. According to my assessment, Silchar Medical College and Hospital needs at least 100 beds in the ICU. We will add 60 more beds in this ICU in the next three to four months,” asserted Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The number of seats have been increased manifold in the last few years at Silchar Medical College and Hospital and that Sarma feels will meet the demand for manpower. “However, for the ICU, we have recruited skilled technicians and nurses and they have either joined or will join soon,” added the health minister.

Himanta Biswa Sarma has visited Karimganj yesterday and was in Cachar today. After analysing the situation, the minister said COVID outbreak is in control in Hailakandi and Karimganj while it is still intense in Cachar. “Positivity rate has decreased to 2 per cent in Karimganj and Hailakandi and in Cachar it is 8 per cent. If we follow the protociols strictly, then in my estimate, in the next 15 to 30 days it will come under control in Cachar too,” added Sarma.
