Historic Heroin Seizure Worth Rs 210 Crore in Silchar: STF and Cachar Police in Joint Operation

In a monumental operation, the Special Task Force (STF) of Assam Police and Cachar Police have orchestrated a historic raid in Silchar, Northeast India, seizing a staggering 105 soap cases alongside several polythene packets containing approximately 21 kilograms of suspected heroin.

The meticulously planned operation unfolded after Parthasarathi Mahanta, the Inspector General of Assam Police and Chief of the STF, arrived in Silchar. Acting on intelligence gathered over the preceding ten days, authorities intercepted a Maruti Suzuki Brezza bearing registration MZ 01 X 7204 at Silchar – Aizawl Road, in the Sildubi area of Cachar District. One individual, identified as C Lalliana from Aizawl, was apprehended from the vehicle.

In a conversation with Barak Bulletin following the raid, STF Chief Parthasarathi Mahanta revealed, “Approximately 10 days ago, we received information about a significant consignment of suspected heroin slated to be smuggled through Cachar from a neighboring state. Subsequently, a meticulous operation was devised, with Silchar earmarked as the interception point. Today’s ambush culminated in the successful interception of the vehicle.”

Mahanta elucidated that the confiscated substance is suspected to be in its raw or pure form, often mixed with other agents before distribution. Consequently, the initial 21 kilograms could potentially amplify to 50 kilograms post-mixing with substances like caffeine. “At the estimated market value, this seizure amounts to approximately Rs 210 crore, marking it as one of the most significant raids in recent memory,” Mahanta emphasized.

Heroin, a highly addictive opioid drug derived from morphine, is synthesized from the opium poppy plant. It is commonly used illicitly for its euphoric effects, inducing a sense of intense pleasure and relaxation. However, heroin abuse poses severe health risks, including addiction, overdose, and long-term health complications. Efforts to curb its trafficking remain a critical challenge for law enforcement agencies worldwide.
