Historic Recognition for Manipuri Language: Associations in Silchar Thank CM HBS and MLA Kaushik Rai

The designation of Manipuri language as the Associate Official Language in four districts of Assam is being widely praised by the Manipuri communities across Assam. In a significant move towards linguistic inclusivity, the Assam Government on Thursday, August 29 passed the Assam Official Language (Amendment) Bill, 2024 designating Manipuri as the Associate Official Language in four districts of the state. This landmark decision comes as a response to the persistent demands from the Manipuri-speaking population, particularly in the Barak Valley region. The Assam Official Language (Amendment) Bill, 2024, introduced by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pijush Hazarika on behalf of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, was tabled on August 22. The bill elevates Manipuri to the status of Associate Official Language in the three districts of Barak Valley—Cachar, Hailakandi, and Karimganj—along with Hojai district in central Assam.

At a press conference held today in Silchar, members of various Manipuri organisations lauded Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Lakhipur MLA Kaushik Rai for their unwavering support in achieving this landmark decision. Nanda Babu Singha, a spokesperson for the associations said, “Today marks a historic moment for the Manipuri-speaking people of Assam. We have long sought recognition of Manipuri as an official language, and although this request was delayed, the current government, particularly Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma and Lakhipur MLA Kaushik Rai, has finally granted the Manipuri language the respect it deserves by designating it as Associate Official Language. We extend our heartfelt thanks to them on behalf of the Manipuri Language Protection Committee and the Assam Manipuri Youth Front.”

Singha also noted that one of the immediate benefits of this recognition is the inclusion of Manipuri in government exams, which previously only offered Assamese, Bengali, and Bodo. He highlighted that this change will significantly ease the examination process for Manipuri-speaking youth and is expected to bring further advantages over time. “Having lived here for the past 200 years, today is truly a historic day for us,” he added.

Dr. K N Chanda Singha expressed similar sentiments, acknowledging the cooperation of both the ruling party and the opposition in passing the bill.
