Hmar students association demands compensation for alleged gang-rape victim; questions DC, SP’s ignorance

An 18-year-old girl was found dead in a remote village near Dwarbond in Dholai legislative assembly constituency. It is alleged that the girl belonging to the Hmar community was gang-raped and then murdered. Prime accused Rajen Das has already hanged himself and the Police has summoned three others- Biswajit Das, Sishir Das and Samiran Das for interrogation. All of them are related to prime accused Rajen Das. All of them are being interrogated now by the police officials.

On the other hand, the Hmar students association along with the victim’s family, friends and others demonstrated in front of the deputy commissioner’s office earlier today. They demanded monetary compensation of Rs 20 lakh for the family and at the same time urged the administration to ensure safety for women in Cachar.

Lalsiemthar Hmar, association’s vice president while speaking with Barak Bulletin questioned the DC, SP’s ignorance. He said, “The body went for postmortem and then was buried but neither the DC nor the SP even bothered to meet the victim’s family. Why? Because they are poor and they live in the interiors?” he questioned.

“If this would have happened somewhere in the town the senior officials including DC, SP would have rushed to the spot and visited the victim’s family,” he said accusing the administration of discrimination.

Lalsiemthar however, thanked the police officials for their prompt action as they have nabbed three more. “We hope that the ones involved in this heinous act are put behind bars. We need to send a strong message to stop the rape culture,” he said.

Biswajit Das, prime accused Rajen Das’s brother who is one of the three nabbed by Police, said he has nothing to do with this case. He also added that he is not sure if his brother has actually raped and murdered the 18-year-old. “Police must find out the ones who used to be with Rajen all the time, his friends and only then they will get to know more about it,” said Das.

Police refused to make any speculations as the investigation is still on.
