Houses set ablaze at Assam-Mizoram border: Parimal Suklabaidya calls DC Hailakandi, SP visits spot
Two houses were set ablaze by Mizo-miscreants last night at around 10:00 pm in Dullabcherra area deep inside the territory of Assam. Tension is rife after the violent act at the Assam-Mizoram border in Hailakandi. The two states have remained at loggerheads for the most part of last year and reports of fresh tension are emerging again.
Guardian Minister for Hailakandi district, Parimal Suklabaidya took stock of the situation along the Assam-Mizoram inter-state border on Sunday. According to a press statement issued by Minister Suklabaidya’s officer, he rang up Deputy Commissioner, Hailakandi, Rohan Kumar Jha and took stock of the prevailing situation along the inter-state border following torching of two abandoned houses at Gollacherra under Gharmura beat on Assam side of the border about 150 metres away from the inter-state border.
The media statement adds, Jha apprised the Minister that out of the two abandoned houses torched by miscreants on Friday, one has been fully gutted while the other partially damaged.
The Deputy Commissioner apprised the Minister that he along with SP and other police officials are visiting the troubled border area and that security has been beefed up to prevent any untoward incident. He said that though the situation is tense, it is under control.
“Minister Suklabaidya asked the Deputy Commissioner to take all possible measures to defuse the tension and to restore peace in the troubled spot. He also instructed the Deputy Commissioner to initiate confidence building measures to bring about complete normalcy in the bordering areas,” adds the press statement.
Meanwhile, Ramandeep Kaur, SP Hailakandi visited the spot along with other senior police officials to take stock of the situation on the ground. She said, “The abandoned houses are in Assam and they have remained vacant as the residents had evacuated them during the skirmish last year.” This is the second untoward incident that took place in Hailakandi. The SP briefed that the Mizo miscreants had illegally constructed a building in the inner line reserve forest area within the boundary of Assam.
About the houses being set ablaze, SP Kaur said, “There are miscreants behind the incident, cases have been registered and the Police is investigating the matter. We have also taken up the issue with the Government of Mizoram.”
