“I am an Indian by choice and Sanskrit is the mother of all Indian languages,” Karim Uddin Barbhuiya after taking oath
“We are all Indian by choice and Indian culture as well as language is our part and parcel. Sanskrit is the mother of all Indian languages including my own mother tongue Bengali as well as the state language Assamese. As it is a special occasion for me in life so I thought to unite myself with India’s soul and heritage by taking an oath in the ancient language. My religion Islam has taught me to know and understand everything with an open mind and heart.”
Karim Uddin Barbhuiya popularly known as Saju has taken oath as a Member of the Legislative Assembly on Friday. He caught many by surprise as he read the Oath in Sanskrit. A couple of days, the Indian origin Member of Parliament in New Zealand Gaurav Sharma had taken the Indian by storm. Video gone viral shows, Sharma reading oath in Te Reo Māori and Sanskrit. Te Reo Māori is an indigenous language of New Zealand, while Sanskrit is that of India. Today, Karim Uddin Barbhuiya’s fluency in Sanskrit also caught many eyes.
Speaking with Barak Bulletin, Barbhuiya said “Himanta Biswa Sharma is a dynamic leader and people trust him irrespective of caste, creed, or community. I’m ideologically opposed to him and BJP’s line of politics but people trust his pandemic management skills and efforts to economic recovery.”
Himanta Biswa Sarma was an active critique of the AIUDF the party Barbhuiya represents. Moreover, BJP’s campaign reverberated around AIUDF Supremo Badaruddin Ajmal and how it would be “dangerous” if Ajmal secures the seat of chief minister. “Me and my party condemn provocative political speeches by Himanta Biswa Sharma during elections. There wasn’t much talk of development and maybe BJP would have got more votes if he talked about development in the last 10-15 years. Keeping all things aside, our issues and ideologies may be different but we all emerge at a common point as humans. We all love our country, our father and mother,” asserts Barbhuiya.
Karim Uddin Barbhuiya is considered the right-hand man of AIUDF supremo Badaruddin Ajmal. AIUDF went into the general election to the Assembly in 2021 in alliance with the All India National Congress-led Mahajot. If sources are to be believed, Congress wanted to field a candidate in its bastion Sonai. However, as highly placed sources said, Ajmal went on to the extent of breaking the alliance had Karimuddin Barbhuiya not been backed in Sonai. However, post-election, Barbhuiya has been criticised for being too close to the BJP. In fact, an audio clipping of his conversation with the former MLA, Aminul Haque Laskar has gone viral. In that audio, Barbhuiya is heard talking about chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and goes on to criticise the people of Dhonehori who fought for him.
Barbhuiya is clear, the politics should be set aside for elections. There should be no politics on development and it is a collective effort. Ideological and issue-based politics will happen again when elections occur,” he concludes.
