Communal tension prevails in Hailakandi; Parimal, Aminul appeal for peace

Difficult times for the people of Hailakandi as reports of communal clashes between two communities are surfacing from several areas of the district. People who left for their work in the morning are stranded as vehicles plying on the road are stopped, vandalized and then set ablaze in SS Road, Old Hospital Road and in many other such places. Many reports of stone-pelting on houses, restaurants and shops have also surfaced on social media.

Locals said they could hear gunshots in the heart of the town. Sonai MLA Aminul Haque Laskar released a video appealing for peace. He requested the people of Hailakandi to maintain peace and harmony and not take law in their own hand. In the video Laskar was heard saying, “For the time being we should forget who is Hindu and who is Muslim and live unitedly. This is Barak Valley, the Island of peace and we should not forget that.”

Through the video Laskar assured the people of Hailakandi that the miscreants responsible for creating this ruckus will be identified and arrested, people should keep their trust on administration.

Parimal Suklabaidya also went live on Facebook and urged the people to maintain peace in the situation. The minister shared, “In this time, it’s important that every individual of all religion and community comes together to help the administration find a solution to the problem. I also request all to maintain peace in this time.”

He urged the district administration of Hailakandi to take immediate actions to restore peace, at the same time, he also alerted administrations of Cachar and Karimganj. He asked the administrations of the neighbouring districts to prepare themselves so that they can ensure whatever is happening in Hailakandi do not travel to other parts of the valley.

In such a scenario, Barak Bulletin pleads to its readers: do not get influenced by social media posts or WhatsApp forwards, do not take law in your own hands, support administration and let them do their job.
