IMD issues Orange alert for Cachar; Heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning expected in Assam
“A trough in westerlies with its axis roughly along 87E, north of 22N runs at 3.1km above mean sea level. A cyclonic circulation lies over Manipur & neighborhood at 0.9 km above mean sea level. Moisture incursion due to strong low-level Southerly/ Southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal to Northeast India is very likely to continue during 19-21 March 2023,” states the Weather Alert issued by the Government of India’s Ministry of Earth Sciences India Meteorological Department
“Under its influence Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall activity with heavy to very heavy rainfall/thunderstorm lightning with gusty winds is very likely during 19-21 March 2023 over the northeast region,” it adds.
The Orange alert for Meghalaya and Assam is for March 20 while on March 19 and 21, it is Yellow. “Light to moderate rainfall at most places with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall. Thunderstorm/ Lightning at isolated places with gusty winds (30-40 Kmph).
Similarly, the district-wise Orange alert for Cachar is on March 20. On March 19 and 21, it stays Yellow and it goes back to Green on March 22. Heavy rainfall coupled with Thunderstorms and Lightning is the alert.
The Orange alert has been issued for Dima Hasao too on March 20, however, for Hailakandi and Karimganj, it is Yellow, which means watch before it turns Green on March 22.
