IMD issues red alert for Cachar predicting heavy rainfall; Orange alert for Karimganj
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday predicted continuation of heavy rainfall activity over northeastern states till June 17 with a red alert sounded for Assam and Meghalaya.
For Cachar district, IMD sounded red alert on 16th June predicting extremely heavy rainfall. Similarly, orange alert has been issued for Dima Hasao and Karimganj district for next few days.
“Moisture incursion is very likely to continue due to strong lower level southerly/southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal to Northeast India during June 13 to 17,” said IMD.
Under its influence, fairly widespread/widespread rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm/lightning/heavy to very heavy with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places is very likely to continue over northeastern states till June 17.
Several places in Assam and Meghalaya are already receiving extremely heavy rainfall, above 100 mm, 250 mm or even 300 mm over 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Monday.
Four people were killed in a massive landslide in Guwahati amid heavy rains that flooded the city, officials said on Tuesday.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), a huge mass of land buried a house, in which there were four people, on a hillside in Nijarapar in Boragaon area of Assam.
