The Regional Meteorological Department in Guwahati has issued a red alert for Silchar, warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning expected between 9:30 PM on May 31 and 8:30 AM on June 1 (Sunday) . The alert, issued late this evening, upgraded the town’s earlier yellow warning to the highest level of weather caution.
According to the department, Silchar is likely to witness moderate to extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds. The red alert indicates a need for immediate precautions as severe weather conditions could pose risks to life and property.
Likely Impacts:
- Waterlogging and flooding in low-lying areas
- Uprooting of trees, broken branches, and road blockages
- Heavy traffic congestion and travel delays
- Reduced visibility during downpours
- Potential damage to weak or vulnerable structures
- Temporary disruption of power supply and municipal services
Public Advisory:
Authorities have urged residents to remain indoors unless necessary and avoid travelling through waterlogged or storm-prone areas. People are also advised to stay updated through official weather bulletins and follow traffic and safety advisories.
Ongoing Weather Watch:
While the red alert is applicable for tonight and the early hours of 1 June, the regional forecast indicates that a yellow alert will remain in effect across the Barak Valley, including Silchar, from 1 to 4 June. This means thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rain may continue in isolated areas over the next few days.
