It is not a communal riot, everything is normal, stop spreading rumours: DC Keerthi Jalli
Earlier in the day, city folks were shocked to know about curfew being implemented in Hailakandi. Tension began between two communities over the offering of Namaz on the road near a mosque at Marwaripatty, an area which has been “on the edge” for the past few days.
Vehicles plying on the road were stopped, vandalized and then set ablaze in SS Road, Old Hospital Road and many other such places. Many reports of stone-pelting on houses, restaurants and shops also surfaced on social media. In a bid to control the situation, curfew under section 144 was clamped in the area to further avoid graving the situation.
Earlier this evening, talking to media about the unfortunate incident, DC Keerthi Jalli said, “It is not a communal riot. Only a couple of miscreants have caused all the trouble. I have been at the location along with SP and everything seems to be in control.”
Urging the people to not spread any kind of false news, the officer said, “All I can ask from the public is that please don’t spread rumours. Please don’t create fear among the public. The entire administration will be here day and night. We will get everything in control. There is nothing to be scared of. But please beware of false news that can ignite the situation.”
She also said that she and the team will be available for people to reach out in case of emergency. “If you get to know of anything or anyone creating trouble please inform the authorities, we will handle it. Please stay at home safely and secure during the curfew,” she further urged.
