Kaibarta Committee expresses opposition to Barak Bandh meets SP; BDF’s Pradip Dutta Roy shares fear of violence
The Barak Valley Kaibarta Samaj Unnoyon Parishad today raised its voice against the remark of Maulana Govindpuri of Banskandi Darul Ullum Madrassa to halt Barak Valley. The members of the Parishad said that the Hindus of Barak Valley don’t live in Pakistan and as long as Barak Hindus are alive, no one has the courage to halt Barak. President of Parishad Sujit Das Choudhury warned that if someone tried to halt Barak Valley then the Parishad will be forced to fight as well as shed blood.
A delegation of the Parishad met with the Superintendent of Police of Cachar on Sunday opposing the Barak Bandh and supported the government. They urged the public to keep their shops open on the day of bandh and continue vehicle movement on the roads. In present of the delegation comprising of Anjan Choudhury, Bajendra Das, Sajal Kanti Das, Arjun Choudhury, Ashok Sarkar, Bijay Das, Lalbashi Das, the President of the Parishad Sujit Das Choudhury said that initially they had decided to hold a huge procession of ten to fifteen thousand people in Silchar on June 27 in opposition to the Barak Bandh. But respecting the instruction of Cachar SP Numal Mahatta, the Parishad will decide whether to take out the procession on June 27 or not through a meeting which will be held on Sunday in the presence of various members of the Parishad. However he assured that on the day of Barak bandh, the movement of people will be normal with shops being open and tuktuks plying normally on the road unabated.
The Parishad members also opposed the demand of separate Barak as they expressed apprehension that the Muslim population will become majority in such a situation and the CM will be from AIUDF. They also insinuated the possibility that Barak could go to Bangladesh or Pakistan in that case.
In response to the Parishad’s opposition, Pradip Dutta Roy, Chief Convenor of the Barak Democratic Front (BDF), which called for the Barak Bandh on June 27, wrote a letter to Cachar SP, appealing for action against any miscreants planning to disrupt the peaceful strike.
In the letter, Dutta Roy stated, “Through reliable sources, we have learned that a section of people, instigated by certain political leaders, are planning to resort to violence to thwart the peaceful proposed strike program on 27th June called by various political parties.”
He assured the SP that the BDF executives and cadres would not participate in any form of picketing on that day, as they believed in independent opinions and the freedom of people. However, he expressed concern that other organisations and individuals might create trouble and urged the police to exercise caution and take immediate action against anyone found disrupting peace.
