Karimganj man murdered in Mizoram: Residents gherao Patharkandi circle office, demand action against culprits
Residents of Patharkandi and nearby areas, on Friday, gheraoed the Patharkandi circle office in Karimganj district with the dead body of a local resident Jamal Uddin (45), who was allegedly killed by miscreants in Mizoram recently.
The deceased Jamal Uddin, son of Sonafar Ali, was a resident of Chandpur village under Patharkandi constituency in Karimganj district. Jamal worked as a supervisor with a construction company at Palsang village in Darlawn block in Aizawl, Mizoram.
On Tuesday, Jamal had a quarrel with a local contractor Zoramluna (32) over the use of substandard quality stones in the construction of a road at the village. On the same night, the contractor along with some of his companions allegedly called Jamal out of his room, took him to an abandoned place and shot him dead. Jamal’s body was later recovered by the police and handed over to his family after post-mortem. A probe has been initiated into the incident. However, there was no arrest made in this connection, as per the last available reports.
The news spread like wildfire after Jamal’s dead body was brought to his native place on Friday. Enraged over the incident, local residents gheraoed the Patharkandi circle office, around 88km from Silchar, around 10:15pm and staged a protest demanding action against those involved the incident. The National Highway-8 (Assam-Tripura road) was about to be blocked by the agitated mob, but that was called off after a request was made by Youth Congress members considering the ongoing examination in different schools.
Youth Congress members Nasir Uddin, Shamim Ahmed, Babul Ahmed and Arun Das among others submitted a memorandum to Karimganj deputy commissioner P.B. Roy (through Patharkandi circle officer L. Kiangte) demanding adequate compensation to the deceased’s family. Eventually, Kiangte spoke to Roy about the matter and assured the protesters about justice to the family. The protest was called off around 12:20pm.
