Karimganj Police Arrest Parents and Aunt for Murdering Mentally Ill Son
The Karimganj Police made significant progress in a shocking case of brutality, arresting three family members from Purahuriya village in connection with the murder of their mentally challenged son, Suhail Ahmed Choudhury. On Friday, the parents and aunt of the victim had beaten the 32-year-old to death and later dumped the body into a nearby pond. While the neighbours silently watched the incident, they had accumulated sufficient proof for the police to act on.
According to local sources, Suhail Ahmed Choudhury, who was mentally unwell and had a history of problematic behaviour, was subjected to severe violence by his family. His mother, Dilwara Begum, was incited by her elder sister, Hasna Begum, leading to brutal acts reminiscent of the Taliban regime. The violence involved both women and Suhail’s father, Abdul Shahid Choudhury. They initially assaulted Suhail with sticks and sharp objects, then confined him to his room. Dilwara Begum set the room on fire, as captured in videos, while Hasna Begum continuously encouraged the violence. Suhail was later beaten with a long bamboo stick until he could no longer move. Covered in mud and unable to stand, he crawled to a nearby pond to wash himself but was allegedly pushed into the water. Later that night, the police found Suhail’s lifeless body in the pond.
Abdul Shahid Chowdhury (71), the father, was taken into custody late Saturday night, with his wife, Dilwara Begum (55), and sister-in-law, Hasna Begum (60), surrendering the next day. Initial police investigations were hampered by the family’s lack of cooperation and suspicious behaviour. However, viral videos showing a brutal assault on the victim and the house being set on fire garnered widespread public outrage and media attention.
The Karimganj Police, who had suspected foul play from the beginning, registered an unnatural death case and conducted a detailed investigation. Abdul Shahid Chowdhury was arrested early Saturday morning, while Dilwara Begum and Hasna Begum eventually surrendered to the authorities. Notably, Hasna Begum had initially evaded arrest but turned herself in on Sunday.
This disturbing case has shocked the local community, drawing significant attention to the severity of the crime. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to uncover more details about this tragic event.
