Karimganj Police arrests battery-robbery gang’s kingpin from Silchar’s Meherpur; 73 battery recovered
On August 20, an FIR was lodged in Char Bazar Police station which stated that around 28 batteries used for E-Rickshaws have been stolen from a garage owned by Dibyojyoti Dey. Since January 2021, this was the seventh such Police complaint.
Immediately, officer in charge of the Char Bazar Police Station, ASI Biramani Singha launched an operation and yesterday, the team managed to achieve a breakthrough. “The truck used to carry the stolen batteries got traced at a toll gate and the driver of the same was detained. After interrogating the driver and investigating the matter, we got to know that there is a garage in Meherpur, Silchar where the batteries could be recovered,” briefed Padmanabh Baruah, SP Karimganj district.
Accordingly, as per the instructions of SP Karimganj, an operation was launched by Singha and IC Traffic Police, Karimganj. “They went to Meherpur late at night and raided the workshop of Murari Singh. From there, we have recovered not only 28 stolen on August 19 but a huge number of batteries. This is a major recovery and I congratulate IC Singha for the successful operation,” added SP Karimganj.
Karimganj Police has arrested Murari Singh who is the suspected kingpin of the battery robbery gang executing one after another theft in Karimganj. Further investigation unveiled that Murari Singh used to buy the stolen batteries at Rs 70 – 80 per kilograms and later sell them for economical benefits. Police arrested Singh and is currently interrogating him to ascertain if there are more involved in this case. SP Karimganj informed that the driver Kaju Ahmed and his handyman Kamal Uddin has also been arrested. The Police suspects that the driver and handyman used to steal the batteries and transport them to the garage of Murari Singh in Meherpur.
The inter-district operation comes as a landmark moment for the Char Bazar Police transformation and SP has lauded their efforts. Moreover, SP Baruah said that 28 batteries will be handed over to the complainant soon after following the procedure.
