Karimganj Police Destroyed Drugs Worth 40 Crore; “There are items we seized over last 2 to 3 years,” SP

On its pledge to make Assam free of drugs and narcotics, Karimganj police on Friday held a massive contraband disposal program and destroyed huge quantities of illicit drugs and liquors. Assam police have been active in their drive against drugs smuggling and trafficking throughout the year and have been able to execute massive seizures of illicit materials from different parts of the entire Barak Valley. Along with synthetic drugs like heroin, Yaba, and cough syrups, Assam Police had seized Ganja (dry marijuana) in large quantities.

In the drug disposal program held in Karimganj on December 24, 3.162 kg heroin, 1,11,256 bottles of Phensedyl cough syrup, 2,172 kg dry marijuana, and 4,51,505 Yaba tablets were destroyed. The total worth of the destroyed contraband items was estimated to be around 40 Crores. The disposal was held at the outskirts of Karimganj town in the presence of the Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police, Chief Judicial Magistrate, District Forest Officer, and the Commandant Officer of 134 No Battalion of Border Security Force.

“These are the consignment of contraband items we seized over last 2 or 3 years, we are disposing of all these keeping the samples off for further legal proceedings,” said Padmanabha Baruah, the SP of Karimganj police.

The SP also conveyed a message through the media that Assam Police will take a ‘No Tolerance’ policy towards and would continue their drive against drugs. On talking about the huge disposal program SP Padmanabha Baruah said, “We are doing this disposal at the outskirt of Karimganj town keeping the pollution in mind, drug disposal is preceded by a legal and administrative procedure, we need a court order, approval from the drug disposal committee meeting and keeping all the samples of disposed of drugs.”

This year so far was eventful for Karimganj Police, as they have been able to nab many illegal Bangladeshi nationals, seizing Burmese Betel Nuts, busting illegal cattle trafficking and apprehending many drug peddlers from the entire Karimganj district.
