Karimganj Police seizes 35,300 bottles of banned cough syrups, arrests 2 UP residents
Karimganj Police, under the leadership of Superintendent of Police Partha Protim Das, made a breakthrough in their fight against drug trafficking on the evening of 6th May, 2023. During the routine Naka checking duty at Churaibari WP Naka Check Point on NH-08, the police stopped a six-wheeler truck bearing registration number UP 21 BN 1404 that was coming from UP towards Tripura.
Upon searching the truck, the police found 35,300 bottles of Codeine Phosphate Cough syrups. The police seized the truck and arrested two individuals identified as Mayonk Sharma, son of Rakesh Sharma, hailing from Hartala, Kanthroad Mao PS- Civil line, Muradabad, UP and Bishal, son of late Habib, hailing from Hartala, Kanthroad Mao, PS- Civil Line, Muradabad, UP.
Superintendent of Police Partha Protim Das lauded the efforts of the police personnel involved in the successful operation. He stated that the Assam Police are committed to curbing the menace of drug abuse and will take strict action against those involved in drug trafficking. “It is my biggest ever cough syrup seizure and the police are investigating the matter further to uncover any possible links to larger drug syndicates,” shared SP Das while speaking with Barak Bulletin.
It is noteworthy that the Assam Police are taking a proactive stance against the transportation and sale of illegal drugs in the state. The police are keeping a close watch on the borders to prevent the entry of banned substances from neighbouring states.
The timely intervention by the police has thwarted the transportation of a large quantity of banned substances, which could have had a devastating impact on the youth of the state. The police have urged the public to come forward and report any suspicious activity related to drug trafficking in the state.
