Katigorah Congress MLA supports separation of Barak from Assam, Says delimitation done unfairly
In a press conference held today, Khalil Uddin Majumdar, the Congress MLA from Katigorah, raised concerns over the recently published delimitation draft by the Election Commission of India. Speaking against the Chief Minister of Assam’s claims that the delimitation is aimed to protect the interests of Khilonjiyas, Majumdar pointed out that the NRC is yet to be completed and there are pending cases on NRC in the High Court and Supreme Court. He asserted that publishing the delimitation draft while these matters remain unresolved raises suspicions of unfairness.
Majumdar emphasised that a fair investigation into the delimitation process would reveal the alleged unfair practices. He highlighted that an affidavit was submitted to the Supreme Court, suggesting that delimitation should only proceed after the completion of the NRC. However, the draft was published despite this plea. Additionally, he expressed discontent over the lack of consultation with opposition parties and the absence of discussions on delimitation in the Assembly.
The MLA further noted the growing dissatisfaction among residents and intellectuals of Barak Valley, who feel deprived by the government and have witnessed a reduction in assembly seats. He revealed that there are increasing calls for the separation of Barak Valley from Assam as a result. According to Majumdar, the intellectuals believe that dividing from Assam would alleviate their region’s deprivation. As public representatives, Majumdar stressed the importance of listening to the concerns of these people.
