Landslide on Silchar-Haflong National Highway at Balacherra, Barak isolated from rest of Assam and India again as moonsoon starts
A landslide occurred at Balacherra portion of the Silchar-Haflong National Highway located in Cachar district due to heavy rain. The landslide disrupted traffic in the area as hundreds of vehicles from both sides got stranded.
As per reports, a large portion of the soil and rocks from the adjacent hillock fell on the National Highway in the afternoon. Due to the landslide, many passengers have got stuck in the area. Work is underway to clear the road for traffic.
It maybe mentioned that in the morning also traffic on Silchar-Guwahati Road (National Highway 6) got disrupted at Lumshnong as water logging occured in the place due to heavy rainfall. The Meghalaya East Jaintia Hills Police issued a traffic advisory at 11 am urging commuters to avoid travelling through the portion of the highway unless absolutely necessary.
A diversion plan was implemented for light vehicles by rerouting them through internal roads to ensure the safety of commuters and prevent any potential accidents or damage to their vehicles. The public has been advised to avoid travelling in the affected portion of NH 6 unless absolutely necessary.
Thus it can be effectively said that with the advent of monsoon, Barak Valley has got isolated from rest of the state and country due to disruption in road communication. Few days back the MP of Silchar while flagging off new flight service between Silchar-Guwahati had announced at Kumbhirgram Airport that the work in Silchar-Haflong section of the East-West Corridor would be completed by the time of Durga Puja this year and the work in Silchar-Guwahati section would be finished in the next two years. It needs to be seen whether he lives upto his words.
