Leo Club of Silchar Greater organise awareness drive on menstrual hygiene

Menstruation is a phenomenon that is quite unique to girls. However, still a massive stigma ponders around the presence of women socially in this period of time. The taboo topic often makes it difficult for girls and women to practice optimal menstrual hygiene causing an impact on emotional state, mentality, lifestyle, and most importantly health. In a pandemic year, an approach is essential to look after the needs and opportunities of adolescent girls.

Thus, Leo Club of Silchar Greater took the opportunity to observe International Girl Child Day by organising an awareness drive on menstrual hygiene and the transition phase of adolescence followed by the distribution of sanitary napkins in a backward area of Shivalik Park, Meherpur where people are still bounded within menstrual taboos. They have distributed 55 packets of sanitary napkins that were sponsored by Subhadeep Daam. Forever Knights NGO was also a part of this project.

Debosmita Biswas, Club President said that “The only reason why we have organised this drive is just to have a talk about the taboo so that the acceptance can be made by heart and it feels comfortable and protective. It’s not only about educating a girl about the hygiene but it is also equally important to educate a boy about the adolescence phase so that they could play a vital role in removing the taboo ”

This year, the theme of International Day of the Girl Child is “My voice, our equal future”. It is a “multi-year, multi-partner campaign and movement for bold action on gender equality.

Neha Chakraborty, Swarup Jyoti Paul, Soumyajyoti Bhattacharjee, Sweta Roy, Subhajit Das were there during the project along with the members of Forever Knight NGO.
