Lightning strike in Katigorah claims two lives and one livestock, one child sustains injuries
In the Gumrah tea garden of Katigorah, situated along the India-Bangladesh border, a harrowing thunderstorm and lightning claimed the lives of two individuals and one livestock. Among the deceased were Rohan Ganju, a sixth-grade student, and Parendo Das, a resident of Bhaterchak village near the border.
The two separate incidents happened this afternoon during a thunderstorm and several lightning strikes that ravaged the area. The first incident unfolded within the Gumrah tea garden area, where young Rohan Ganju tragically lost his life while he went fishing, with Joykumar Ganju, a child, sustaining injuries in the process. Promptly, locals rallied to rescue the injured child, swiftly transporting him to the nearest medical facility.
Subsequently, another devastating lightning strike ensued, this time at Lebarputa in Katigorah near the international border. Parendo Das on seeing the approaching storm went to return his cow to safety. While accompanying the cow home from the grazing field, a lightning strike took both their lives away.
Following these distressing incidents, authorities swiftly responded, recovering the bodies of the deceased. The bodies were then transported by the local police to Silchar Medical College for postmortem. The thunderstorms and lightning have claimed several lives in the last few weeks. Caution must be taken when during such a natural phenomenon, it is crucial to prioritize safety to minimize the risk of harm. During thunderstorms, it is advised to stay away from tall objects such as trees, flagpoles, and telephone poles, as they can attract lightning strikes. If you’re in an open area, crouch down low, but avoid lying flat on the ground.
