Low intensity earthquake jolts Silchar and entire Northeast; epicentre Nagaland

Low-intensity earthquake jolts Silchar and its neighbouring area. At around 1:17 PM in the afternoon, residents of Silchar and the entire Northeastern region felt tremors of the earthquake. As per the Government update, the epicentre of the earthquake was around 25 kms away from Phek in Nagaland, close to India-Myanmar international border. The magnitude of the earthquake is measured to be 5.3 in Richter’s scale.

One resident of Sreepalli Silchar says he was eating his lunch when all of a sudden everything started moving. “The glass of water fell off, I screamed and then my mother cried out louder. But it was all over soon and back to normal,” says he.

An employee of a public sector unit working at his office in Rangirkhari said they did not feel the tremors. “Normally whenever there is an earthquake the electricity gets disconnected but nothing like that happened today,” said the employee.
