Majuri Sramik Union leader, Dharitri Sharma arrested for alleged “Kanchan Da” links

The Crime Branch of Guwahati Police has taken the custody of Assam Mojuri Sramik Union, District Secretary, Dharitri Sharma. Sharma has been in the news for his protest against the construction of Airport in Daloo. His argument was to hold public meetings in order to gain the confidence of all the labourers and the tea tribe before going ahead and uprooting the plantation of three million. He was detained by Silchar Sadar Police station and released after State-wide protests.

Barak Bulletin can confirm that Dharitri Sharma has been arrested again, this time by the Crime Branch of Guwahati Police for his alleged links with Arun Kumar Bhattacharjee alias ‘Kanchan Da’.

Cachar SP confirmed the development to Barak Bulletin and said, “Crime Branch is investigating a case related to Kanchan Da and Sharma’s name has surfaced in the investigation. So, he has been arrested.”

Assam Police has been on a drive against the Maoists in the state. Several operations have been carried out so far and many individuals have been arrested or detained for interrogation. After Arun Kumar Bhattacharjee was arrested last year from a tea garden under the jurisdiction of Udharbond Police, Guwahati Police Commissioner Harmeet Singh held a press conference and said as quoted by NDTV, “He is a big catch for Guwahati Police. We got information about his movements in December and he slipped through two-three operations earlier. But last evening, we were able to arrest him when he tried to hide in a tea garden.”

Police sources in Silchar informed that a list of names have arrived at the district headquarters with he name of individuals who had close links with Arun Kumar Bhattacharjee and were involved in Maoist activities. More arrests are likely, hints the source in the Police Department.
