Man Held With Suspected Heroin Worth Over Rs 1 Crore in Cachar, Police Injured During Anti-Drug Operation
Cachar Police have apprehended a man and seized 218 grams of suspected heroin worth over Rs 1 crore during an anti-drug operation carried out in Cachar district on Thursday.
According to police sources, the operation was conducted on March 5 at the bordering area of Lakhipur Police Station and Kachudharam Police Station following specific inputs about drug movement in the area.
During the operation at Motinagar, police intercepted a suspect and recovered 15 plastic soap cases containing suspected heroin from a backpack he was carrying. The total weight of the seized substance is about 218 grams. Police also seized an iPhone 13 Pro mobile phone from his possession.
The apprehended person has been identified as Vishal Das, a resident of the Amraghat area under Kachudharam Police Station.
According to locals in the area, there were other four to five individuals involved in the operation. However, the police have not officially confirmed this claim and have so far stated that only one person was detained in connection with the seizure. Authorities have not provided any further details regarding the alleged presence or involvement of additional suspects.
Addressing the media, Additional Superintendent of Police of Cachar, Rajat Kumar Pal, said the operation was launched based on intelligence inputs about possible drug trafficking in the area.
He stated that the accused attempted to flee when the police team moved in, following which minimum force had to be used to detain him. Pal further said a few police personnel sustained minor injuries during the operation.
He estimated that the seized heroin would be worth around Rs 1.2 crore in the black market. The officer added that the case is sensitive as it may be linked to a larger drug syndicate. He said detailed information about the source of the heroin cannot be disclosed at this stage as the investigation is ongoing.
However, he informed that the suppliers involved in the case are believed to be locals from the area. Police have taken the accused into custody and further investigation is underway.
