Man Practising as Fake Gynaecologist Held in Silchar; Police Flags Barak Valley Medical Racket

In a shocking case of medical fraud, a 43-year-old man from Sribhumi, Badarpur, has been arrested for posing as a doctor and treating patients without ever having earned a legitimate medical degree. Cachar Police arrested him for treating patients as an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist (OBGYN) as risking many lives.

Pulak Malakar, who had been practising as an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Shiva Sundari Nari Sikshashram in Park Road, Silchar, was taken into custody by Cachar Police on Sunday (August 3). Allegedly, he had been involved in handling numerous pregnancies and even performing caesarean sections at the hospital for several years.

Before joining Nari Sikshashram, Malakar reportedly worked at private hospitals. He initially began his career as a fourth-grade employee but started posing as a qualified doctor around 2016.

According to police, Malakar had obtained a forged MBBS certificate from the Sriram Chandra Bhanja Medical College and Hospital, a government medical college in Cuttack, Odisha. The certificate, police allege, was purchased for a large sum of money through a medical racket believed to be operating in the Barak Valley region.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Numal Mahatta, addressing the media on Monday, confirmed, “Based on secret intel, we began investigating and found that Pulak Malakar was treating patients using a fake degree. Upon verification, the certificate from Sriram Chandra Bhanja Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack was found to be completely forged.”

He added, “Malakar was working in Silchar using a fake identity as a doctor since 2016. We arrested him under case number 786/24 registered at Sadar Police Station based on relevant segments of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and have taken him into a six-day police remand for further interrogation after we produced him in the court.”

SSP Mahatta further warned that strict legal action will be taken against anyone found using fake medical qualifications in the district. “There appears to be a racket operating from Barak Valley, facilitating such fake certificates in exchange for hefty payments. Our investigation is ongoing to trace all those involved.”

The arrest raises urgent questions about hospital oversight and the unchecked spread of fake medical practitioners.

The big question is how he got the certificate from a government hospital, and how he fooled multiple hospitals or were they aware of the arrangement?
